Phil "Philip" Rynda is an American character designer. He was born in Medford, New Jersey. Phil is most known for his work on Adventure Time where the "Phil Face" spawned. He has also worked on shows such as Gravity Falls, The Venture Bros., and Chowder.
Phil is a director for the Pilot of the Cartoon Network original series We Bare Bears.
Awards
Phil won a Prime-time Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Achievement in Animation - Character Design for his work on Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure.
Career
Phil studied at the School of Visual Arts in film, video, and animation from 1999 to 2003 while also working as an animator for the advertising firm, WDDG. His job there ended a year after he graduated SVA.
From there, he went to work with NoodleSoup on The Venture Bros. as a character designer. Phil worked with them for 9 months; from July 2004 to March 2005. 3 months after he started his work on The Venture Bros., Phil worked with Funny Garbage as a character designer on the show Katbot. His job with NoodleSoup ended, and his job with Funny Garbage ended a year later. Phil then proceeded to work on several other shows with Cartoon Network, all as a character designer.
From January 2009 to February 2011, Phil worked with the Adventure Time team and led a team of designers. His work on Adventure Time made a mark on his career, as it is now the show he is most known for working on. In February, Phil announced he'd leave the crew to go work on Gravity Falls. He worked with Disney from February to March 2012, working with them for a year and two months. From there, he then went back to work as a creative director for Cartoon Network for two years. During that period, he helped direct the Pilot for We Bare Bears. After his job with them ended once more, he went to work with Nickelodeon and had become the Vice President of Art Development there. He is still Nickelodeon's VP to this day.
Trivia
- Starting since September 2010, Phil works as an animation instructor at CalArts, and has been for 5 years so far.
